Just FYI guys.... HOW TO IMPORT A BOAT FROM THE USA Reply with quote How to import a BOAT and TRAILER from the USA into Canada Reply with quote Edit/Delete this post OK. I'm getting lots of questions on what exactly you need to do to buy a boat and trailer in the USA and import it into Canada. PLEASE NOTE: YOU DO NOT NEED A BROKER TO DO THIS!!! THIS IS VERY EASY TO DO AND YOU WILL BE THROWING AWAY $300.00 FOR NOTHING. HAVE NO FEAR AS YOUR FRIENDLY CUSTOMS OFFICERS ARE HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY AND ALL QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO CALL AND ASK! http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/dm-md/d19/d19-12-1-eng.pdf The process is very easy. step 1 find boat deal http://www.boats.com http://www.boattraderonline.com http://www.ebay.com etc step 2 arrange to buy boat step 3 go pick up boat and pay for it NOTE: If you are taking more than $10,000.00 Canadian out of the country with you...you are required by law to stop at the Customs office and fill out a FINTRAC form. You also must delcare the money going into the USA or risk it being seized!!! I strongly suggest doing a bank transfer instead as this is safer, however if you are nervous use a bank draft to pay etc. I would not carry cash! You would be very unhappy if you got robbed in the USA. If you use a bank draft and when you see the boat it is not what you thought it would be, you can bring that back to your bank and cancel it and get your money back (less the conversion difference of course). http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5052-eng.html http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5052-eng.html This is the form you fill out for Canada Customs when exporting more than $10,000 NOTE: Ask at your bank for a better rate. If you are buying over $10,000.00 they will knock 1/2 percent off often. NOTE: The BEST exchange rate can be had at the Windsor Train Station Currency Exchange. You need to bring them a bank draft and they will give you a bank draft in US Dollars. They do not want large amounts of cash there...but....if you can save 2% it's well worth your time when you are dealing with large amounts of currency being exchanged. Just FYI step 4 drive to Canadian border...declare that you bought a boat/trailer and provide sales agreement/bill of sale with what you paid. NOTE: Please don't undervalue the boat as you will get caught and the penalties are huge and just not worth trying to save a few bucks in taxes step 5 go into Customs office and fill out the RIV (registar of imported vehicles) for your trailer. you MUST make sure you have a title/registration/certificate of origin for the trailer or you will not be able to licence it in Canada NOTE: Every Customs office HAS the RIV Form 1...so don't worry about bringing it with you. You WILL need to get the month/year of manufacture off the sticker on the trailer. step 6 pay your taxes on boat (GST/PST) and ONLY the GST on the trailer. I strongly suggest you have the boat and trailer separate on your bill of sale ie/ Boat 10,000.00 trailer 1000.00 as this makes it easier to pay the PST at the MTO when you register your trailer step 7 if the Customs office doesn't do it for you go online to the RIV website and pay your $220.00 fee. You will then be mailed or emailed FORM 2 which is the inspection portion for the trailer. ANY Canadian Tire will inspect it for free. step 8 take both Form 1 RIV and Form 2 to the MTO (along with your Form B-15 proof of paying taxes and bill of sale) and register your trailer. You will also have to pay the PST there on the trailer. http://www.riv.ca/rivinspection.aspx step 9 go to the Service Canada website and get the form for registering a boat for a NEW Ontario Boat number. You will have to mail this form, a copy of government ID, your bill of sale and customs B-15 proof of taxes payment to NB http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sc/boats/pleasurecraft.shtml http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Corp-Serv-Gen/5/Forms-Formulaires/searchrs.aspx?formnumber=84-0172E http://www.tc.gc.ca/wwwdocs/Forms/84-0172E_1007-04_E.pdf This is the boat registration form you will need to fill out and send in step 10 when you get your new Ontario boat number, put it on your boat. step 11 the RIV will send you a compliance sticker to put on your trailer. step 12....go out fishing and enjoy the boat that you just bought saving probably 30-40% over buying in Canada. I know it seems like a lot of steps, but honestly it's very easy to bring a boat into Canada (or car/truck/motorcycle etc) I hope this information is helpful.
